A Class Mercedes vs C Class: What’s the Difference?

Comparing the A-Class and C-Class Mercedes? Discover key differences in size, features, performance, and price to find the perfect luxury sedan for your lifestyle.

When shopping for a luxury sedan, Mercedes-Benz offers a variety of choices, each designed with high-end craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology, and thrilling performance. Two of the most popular options are, of course, the A-Class and C-Class sedans

While both classes share the signature elegance associated with the Mercedes name, they cater to different drivers. So, keep reading to discover which class is right for you. We’ll break down the key differences between the A-Class Mercedes vs. C-Class Mercedes, to help you determine which one best fits your lifestyle. From size and features to performance and pricing, we’ll cover it all.

A- vs. C-Class Mercedes: Detailed Comparison by Category

Before we dive into our comparison, it’s important to note that Mercedes halted production of the A-Class after 2022. To make our comparison as direct as possible, we’ll compare the 2022 base models of both vehicles. But for those looking for the latest and greatest, don’t stop reading yet — we’ll note any differences between the 2022 and 2025 model years of the Mercedes C-Class, too.

Size and Capacity

While visually similar, the A-Class and C-Class have slightly different body styles. The A-Class is a compact sedan, making it a fantastic option for urban drivers who need a nimble vehicle for tight streets and parking spaces. On the exterior, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is just below 15 feet (179.1”) long and almost 6 feet (70.7”) wide. On the interior, this class offers 33.9 inches of rear legroom and 8.6 cubic feet of trunk space, making it ideal for individuals or small families who don’t require extensive cargo room.

On the other hand, the C-Class is a midsize sedan with more interior space. On the outside, the 2022 C-Class is just over 15.5 feet (187”) long and 6.2 feet (74.4”) wide. Inside, it boasts 36 inches of rear legroom and 12.6 cubic feet of trunk space, making it more accommodating for long road trips or extra luggage.

2025 C-Class Differences:

  • Rather than the 12.6 cubic feet of trunk room of the 2022 model, the 2025 C-Class dimensions “only” offer 11.6 cubic feet of trunk space.

Interior and Features

No matter the year, the A-Class and C-Class showcase Mercedes-Benz’s attention to detail, offering premium materials and innovative technology. The A-Class interior includes modern, standard features like a digital instrument cluster, backup camera, sleek 7” infotainment system, and customizable ambient lighting to enhance your driving experience. It also provides luxury features like a panoramic sunroof, heated mirrors, and advanced safety features.

However, the C-Class is a class above the rest, offering the same features as the A-Class but a more refined and spacious cabin with premium upgrades like:

  • An 11.9” infotainment display
  • An electrochromic (auto-darkening) rearview mirror
  • A hands-free trunk lid
  • Heated mirrors
  • A leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Blind spot detection
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Lane-centering cruise control
  • A lane-departure warning system
  • And much more

Performance and Handling

There are noticeable differences in performance between the A-Class and C-Class Mercedes. The 2022 A-Class is powered by a 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers a respectable 188 horsepower (hp) and 221 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque. That power is transmitted to the ground by a seven-speed automatic transmission, ensuring efficient power transfer, quick acceleration, and high top speeds.

However, the 2022 C-Class takes performance a step further with a hybrid 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder that produces a whopping 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. To utilize all of that additional power and ensure optimal transfer, Mercedes paired the engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. If you enjoy spirited driving or simply want a vehicle with more punch, C-Class performance might be what you’re looking for.

Pricing

One of the most significant distinctions between the two classes is pricing. The A-Class sedan is an entry-level luxury option, providing premium features at an accessible MSRP of $33,950. It’s an excellent choice for first-time Mercedes-Benz buyers or those wanting to enter the luxury vehicle world.

The C-Class, with its enhanced power, larger dimensions, and additional class features, has an MSRP of $43,550. However, the opulent experience it offers easily justifies that cost, making it ideal for those who want the best in comfort and performance from their Mercedes-Benz sedan.

2025 C-Class Differences:

  • The 2025 C-Class’s MSRP is $48,450, rather than the $43,550 of the 2022 model.
